Maintenance Guide

Your APB Canopy, Dog Box or Toolbox is built for durability and longevity under tough Australian conditions. Regular maintenance will keep it looking great and performing at its best for years to come. Use the following checklist to care for your investment:

Cleaning and Surface Care:

External Surfaces:

  • Clean your Canopy, Dog Box or Toolbox regularly with a mild automotive wash and a soft sponge or cloth.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove road grime, bird droppings, and dust, which can damage finishes over time.
  • Wipe dry with a clean microfiber or soft towel to prevent water spots and streaks.

Raw Alloy Surfaces:

  • Periodically apply a non-abrasive alloy polish to maintain shine and prevent oxidation.
  • For stubborn stains or light surface corrosion, use a dedicated aluminium cleaner.

Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use abrasive cleaners, strong solvents, or acid-based products as they can dull or damage powder coating or raw alloy surfaces.

Hinges, Locks, Gas Struts & Latches:

  • Lubrication: Inspect all hinges, locks, latches, and sliding mechanisms every 2-3 months. Apply silicone spray or a light lubricant to moving parts to ensure smooth function and prevent corrosion.
  • Adjustment: Check that latches and locks operate easily and align correctly. Tighten any loose fasteners.
  • Locks: Spray lock lubricant into locks every 6 months for smooth key operation.
  • Gas Struts: Look for oil or gas leaks around the strut shaft or seals. Inspect mounting brackets, ball joints, and fasteners. Tighten any loose hardware. Open and close the supported hatch, lid, or door. If the strut feels weak, fails to hold, or moves jerkily, it’s time to replace.

Rubber Seals & Weather Protection:

  • Inspect door and hatch seals for wear, cracks, or displacement. Wipe seals with a damp cloth and mild soap to remove dirt and grime.
  • Apply a rubber conditioner every 6 months to keep seals supple and to prolong their lifespan.
  • Promptly replace any damaged seals to ensure your canopy or dog box remains dust- and water-tight.

Vents:

  • Check vent openings regularly for blockages (mud, leaves, hair, etc.). Remove any obstructions with a soft brush or compressed air to maintain proper airflow.

Interior Maintenance:

Dog Box Interiors:

  • Remove bedding and wash out the compartment with warm soapy water as needed.
  • For stubborn odours, use a pet-safe disinfectant or odour-neutralising product.
  • Allow to dry completely before replacing bedding.
  • Canopy Interiors: ○ Organise and check mounting points for shelving, drawers, pantry or fridge slides, tightening if necessary.

Hardware Checks:

  • Inspect all mounting bolts, nuts, rivets, and hardware every 6-12 months, retightening as required. Replace any showing signs of corrosion or fatigue.

Mounted Accessories:

  • Inspect roof racks and accessory mount points for security and tightness.
  • Re-tighten fittings regularly, especially after rough travel.

General Tips:

  • After off-road or coastal use: Rinse the entire canopy or dog box thoroughly to remove salt, mud, and debris.
  • Weather protection: Consider a protective wax or sealant on powder-coated surfaces for added UV and corrosion resistance.
  • Check after each trip: Quickly inspect for damage, fastener looseness after long trips or rough conditions.

 Installation Instructions

 1. Position, Mark & Drill:

Place your canopy or dog box onto your ute tray. Ensure it’s square and in your desired position. Mark where you need to drill through the product, and drill through the false floor of the product and into the tray at your marked position.

Tip: For maximum strength and stability, we recommend drilling through the SHS (Square Hollow Section) framing. If this isn’t possible, bolts can be positioned near the product’s corners. You can locate the underfloor frame by referencing the roof  frame or in line with the vertical supports front to rear at the end of the jack-off points.

2. Fit the Bolt Assembly:

For each hole slide a 37mm flat washer onto each M10 100mm bolt. Insert the bolt down through the floor and through the tray. Secure with washers and nuts underneath the tray, add a second 37mm washer to the bolt end. Thread an M10 Hex Nyloc Nut onto the bolt and tighten securely.

3. Final Check:

Double-check all four bolts and nuts. Ensure everything is tight and the canopy or dog box is secure.
