Maintenance
Jack-off legs allow for easy removal and re-installation of your canopy or dog box, but regular maintenance is essential to ensure safe and smooth operation.
General Cleaning & Inspection:
- After each use: Inspect for dents, cracks, or signs of damage to the legs, foot pad, and mounting point.
- Keep threads clean: Check the threaded shaft for debris, rust, or hard buildup. Clean gently with a soft brush if required.
Lubrication:
- Apply a LIGHT coat of silicone spray or dry PTFE lubricant to the threads every few uses to keep winding smooth and reduce wear.
- Avoid using heavy oils or greases which attract grit and dust, causing premature wear or difficulty in winding.
Operation & Winding:
- Never use a drill or power tool to wind the jack leg, this can damage or strip the internal mechanism, rendering the leg unsafe or unusable.
- Always wind the handle manually and smoothly, without excessive force.
- Stop immediately if you feel unusual resistance or hear grinding noises.
Storage:
- When not in use: Retract each leg fully and store in a clean, dry place.
- If mounted make sure the legs are securely fastened and cannot rattle free during travel.
- Protect from harsh environmental exposure where practical.
Regular Safety Checks:
- Before each use: Check that all nuts, bolts, and mounting brackets are tight and free from rust or damage. Inspect feet and base plates for secure welds and no excessive bending. Ensure legs lock securely in both extended and stored positions.
- Annually: Inspect the entire jack-off leg system for wear or fatigue, especially if used frequently or for heavy loads.
Hardware Checks:
- Inspect all mounting bolts, nuts, rivets, and hardware every 6-12 months, retightening as required. Replace any showing signs of corrosion or fatigue.
Mounted Accessories:
- Inspect roof racks and accessory mount points for security and tightness.
- Re-tighten fittings regularly, especially after rough travel.
General Tips:
- After off-road or coastal use: Rinse the entire canopy or dog box thoroughly to remove salt, mud, and debris.
- Weather protection: Consider a protective wax or sealant on powder-coated surfaces for added UV and corrosion resistance.
- Check after each trip: Quickly inspect for damage, fastener looseness, or water ingress after long trips or rough conditions.
Quick Tips for Longevity:
- Never overload or side-load your jack-off legs.
- Avoid dropping or hitting the legs. Shock can damage internal threads or welds.
- Keep the lifting area clear of people and pets during use.
Remember: Using power tools to wind jack-off legs will damage the internal mechanism and void your warranty. Manual operation only.
